Healthy Eating Habits: Progress Over Perfection

In this week’s article I decided to focus on a self-care practice that’s particularly challenging for me: nutrition. Growing up, I didn’t always make the healthiest choices and never really learned to enjoy cooking. However, over the years, I’ve come to understand just how crucial good nutrition is for our overall health. Even now, I sometimes struggle to make the best choices.

For instance, earlier this summer, I went to a Sea Dogs baseball game with my family at Hadlock Field here in Southern Maine. The atmosphere was fun and festive, and I made a nostalgic choice to eat food that didn’t agree with me, I realized I didn’t feel so good and didn’t even like the taste, so I didn’t finish it. Next time at the ballpark, I know I can make a different, more intentional choice.

Over the years, I’ve found that the key to making healthy food choices lies in both the understanding of my emotional eating triggers and my need to develop some culinary skills. These factors have significantly impacted my health outcomes. It’s also important for me to be kind to myself because self-judgment and negative self-talk often lead to less preparing of healthy home cooked meals and more emotional eating. For me, adapting has been a process, but I keep the benefits in mind.

A balanced approach to nutrition supports disease prevention and helps manage existing conditions. Proper nutrition is essential for aging well, providing our bodies with the necessary nutrients. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains helps manage weight, reduce inflammation, and prevent chronic diseases. Staying hydrated and limiting processed foods will enhance overall well-being.

Nutrition also plays a crucial role in our mental state. A balanced diet rich in mood-stabilizing nutrients can be an ally to keep anxiety at bay. Being mindful of our caffeine and sugar intake, embracing whole foods, and staying hydrated can contribute to a more balanced emotional state. Good nutrition is also a remarkable stress reducer; nutrient-dense foods stabilize blood sugar levels and support brain health, helping us manage stress more effectively.

Ultimately, a well-nourished body is better equipped to handle life’s challenges, making good nutrition a cornerstone of overall well-being. Remember, aiming for perfection isn’t realistic; instead, set your intentions for progress. Gradual, small changes can compound over time, leading to a healthier and happier life. Let’s embrace the journey towards better nutrition together, one mindful choice at a time.
