Life Ideals

Meet Karen Lane, LCSW

Founder, Life Ideals

Karen Lane is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than two decades of experience helping people deal with stress, trauma, burnout and big life changes. Her work focuses on how the mind, the body and daily habits affect each other, and on helping people make changes that are realistic and that last.

Karen’s path has run both inside and outside the therapy room. Early in her career she was an Outward Bound instructor in Maine, a ski patroller in Colorado and a Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua. Those experiences showed her firsthand how nature, community and physical challenge build resilience. She went on to work as a mobile crisis clinician, a school-based therapist, and a psychotherapist in private practice in Southern Maine. In every setting she saw the same pattern: people are often skilled at recognizing what others need while overlooking their own. That observation, and her belief that caring for others begins with caring for ourselves, became the starting point for Life Ideals.

Karen Lane licensed clinical social worker based in Maine sitting on a couch.

Grounded in lifestyle medicine

Life Ideals grew out of Karen’s clinical training at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. There she trained in a research-based model of stress management built around six areas of daily life. Those areas were usually taught as a checklist. Karen’s insight was that they work as one connected system: progress in one area supports the others, so people can start from a strength instead of a weakness.

Evidence-informed and
refined in practice

Karen developed those six areas into the Life Ideals Model: relaxation, mental flexibility, social connection, sleep, physical activity and nutrition.

The model draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and goal-setting research. She developed the Life Ideals Self-Care Needs Assessment and Wellness Dashboard to support individuals in identifying their areas of strength and growth, and turn the results into personal goals and realistic next steps.

Karen Today

Since then, Karen has refined the model through use in her own practice, in group programs at Integrative Health Center of Maine, and with other clinical practices. The assessment has received funding from the Maine Technology Institute and is now the subject of a formal, multi-phase validation study.

Karen runs her psychotherapy practice in Cumberland, Maine and trains clinicians and teams to integrate the Life Ideals Model into their practice. She is a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and Southern Maine Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (SMACT), and has additional training in Nonviolent Communication, yoga and holistic health coaching.

Foundation Series

The Foundation Series is a psychoeducational program designed to engage clients in the Life Ideals Model in a group setting. This four-week series helps participants better understand stress, strengthen nervous system awareness, and practice authentic self-care in ways that truly fit their needs, values, and lives. Participants complete the Life Ideals Self-Care Needs Assessment as part of their intake and schedule a 20-minute orientation call with Karen.

Each one-hour session includes practical teaching, guided reflection, supportive discussion, and reasonable goal setting.

Session Topics Include:

Professional Trainings and Speaking

Karen offers professional training and speaks about Life Ideals and emotional resilience and regulation in various settings. Karen has spoken at Mercy Hospital, the ACLM Annual Conference, Art and Science of Health Promotion Conference, among others.

Below is one of the foundational training programs that Karen provides. Get in touch to discuss speaking and training opportunities.

Co-Regulation in Practice: Tools to Strengthen Authentic Self-Care, Support Stress Reduction, and Create Lasting Change

Karen offers a practical, skills-based training for behavioral health professionals seeking better tools for stress, burnout, nervous system regulation, and strategies for client follow-through.

This in-person or online training integrates Life Ideals’ six self-care practices with a polyvagal-informed, relational neuroscience approach and ACT strategies, making it easier for participants to practice authentic and sustainable self-care and co-create client-centered self-care plans (rather than relying on generic “shoulds”).

You’ll learn how nervous system state shapes behavior and connection, how to understand and expand the window of tolerance, and how to use self-empathy (feelings/needs/requests ) with the Four Chairs (NVC) framework to reduce shame/conflict, increase clear/compassionate communication, and support meaningful change.

You’ll leave with mindfulness micro-practices and habit tools that make follow-through more achievable in real life – for you and your clients.
